Tips for Vegan Travelers in Playa del Carmen:
Communicate Your Needs: Many resorts are happy to accommodate vegan diets if you inform them in advance. This is huge! I have had resorts create full vegan menus after telling them I am vegan so don't be afraid to speak up. Often times the chefs love the challenge of creating delicious plant-based meals on the fly. If you have a special request the resort will do their best to find ingredients to make something special for you!
Explore Local Vegan Spots: Playa del Carmen has a vibrant vegan food scene with numerous cafes and restaurants worth exploring. Playa del Carmen offers a ton of vegan options around town as it's in a trendy tourist area. Check out the local scene and try something you can't get where you're from. I like to visit 5th Avenue or Quinta Avenida, whenever I'm in Playa del Carmen. There are a ton of shops and places to eat. This is typically where I grab some souvenirs for friends and family. Many of the resorts have shuttles that take you there and back for around $2-5 round trip.
Bring Vegan Essentials: Pack snacks or supplements you may need, as some specialty items might not be readily available. Some airports offer very few if any vegan options. Be sure to have portable food items such as snack bars, fruit, and other easy to travel with goods. My snacks usually include fruit, protein bars, cup ramen(you can get hot water on the plane), trail mix, and anything else that doesn't require refrigeration and doesn't take up much space. It's also a good idea to pack food for short layovers even if the airport does have vegan options. The last thing you want is to rush through the airport because it took too much time to wait for food. Trust me, you'll be glad you brought your own food.
